‘No genuinely affordable housing’ in Australia, warns housing minister

first_imgMinister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said society had broken a promise to young people.Mr de Brenni said policy makers had a responsibility to get it right, something he hoped would be the case with the Queensland government’s forthcoming ten year housing strategy.“Our housing strategy will, over ten years, turn the traditional notion of public housing on its head. As we redevelop homes in areas of historic public housing concentration, I want to make sure our new homes are at the cutting edge of design. You will be able to walk through these neighbourhoods without being able to tell which homes are public housing and which ones aren’t.”Video Player is loading.Play VideoPlayNext playlist itemMuteCurrent Time 0:00/Duration 0:47Loaded: 0%Stream Type LIVESeek to live, currently playing liveLIVERemaining Time -0:47 Playback Rate1xChaptersChaptersDescriptionsdescriptions off, selectedCaptionscaptions settings, opens captions settings dialogcaptions off, selectedQuality Levels720p720pHD540p540p360p360p270p270pAutoA, selectedAudio Trackdefault, selectedFullscreenThis is a modal window.Beginning of dialog window. ‘NPA vandalism an act of desperation’

first_imgThere were no nearby security cameras, however, so identifying the vandals would be difficult. The Communist Party of the Philippinesmarked its 51st founding anniversary on Dec. 26. The New People’s Army is itsarmed wing while the NDF is a coalition of revolutionary social and economicjustice organizations, agricultural unions, trade unions, and indigenous rightsgroups, among others. Aganan Bridge in the municipality ofPavia was spray-painted with the graffiti “Viva CPP NDF – Mabuhay ang 51stAnniv sang CPP NPA NDF.” As of 2019, the organization claimsthat the number of its members and supporters is growing, despite claims by thePhilippine government that the organization is about to be destroyed. PN Photo Executive Order (EO) 70 has dealt abig blow to the CPP and its armed wing, the NPA, said Vinoya. EO 70 issued by President Duterteinstitutionalized the “whole-of-nation approach” in addressing the insurgencyproblem. It is the synchronization of various government agencies’ plans andprograms to combat insurgency because guns and cannons alone could not do thejob. The CPP has been fighting a guerrillawar against the state since its establishment. Although its ranks initiallynumbered around 500, the party grew quickly, supposedly due to the declarationand imposition of martial law by former president and dictator Ferdinand Marcosduring his 21-year rule. ILOILO – The Philippine Army condemneda recent vandalism that it claimed was done by rebels. The organization remains anunderground operation, with its primary goals being to overthrow the Philippinegovernment through armed revolution. He welcomed the surrender of manyrebels this year, most of whom were NPA commanders. “What they did was an act of cowardice. They are afraid to face us and they don’t want to admit they are losing the war. Wala na silang mga tao kasi some of their men ay nag-surrender na kasi talagang nagugutom na sila,” Pancito added.center_img Vinoya expressed confidence of endingthe insurgency in Western Visayas by next year. “The vandalism was a sign offrustration. The rebels were also trying to sow fear in the community,” saidthe Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) spokesperson, Captain Cenon Pancito III. Patrolling policemen of Pavia spottedthe graffiti. The rebels used red spray paint. By 3ID’s estimate, seven rebel frontsare operating in 87 barangays cross Western Visayas./PN By the end of Marcos’ dictatorship, the number of combatants had expanded to include more than 10,000 fighters. Ina speech before the US Congress in 1986, Marcos’ successor Corazon Aquinoaccredited the party’s rapid growth as being caused by Marcos’ attempts tostifle it with the “means by which it grows” with his establishment ofmartial law, suggesting that other governments view it as a lesson when dealingwith communist insurgencies. “EO 70 aims to achieve genuine peace.Discrediting EO 70 is like rejecting peace,” said Vinoya. The 3ID commander, Brigadier GeneralEric Vinoya, declared last week: “We are gaining against the NPA. We are ontrack to winning and ending the local communist armed conflict in WesternVisayas.” “Government forces are serious infulfilling the people’s will to end the insurgency. We are trained to bealways ready,” he stressed. Vinoya warned the CPP-NPA, “Expectmore intensified combat operations. You only have two options, surrender ordie.” The CPP was formed by Prof. Jose MariaSison on Dec. 26, 1968. It was designated as a terrorist group by currentPhilippine president and Sison’s former student, Rodrigo Duterte in December2017.last_img read more
